Brand new series Alex Polizzi’s Italian Islands begins at 8pm on Channel 5.

Each episode sees Alex return to her roots once more, delving into the culture, cuisine and history of some of Italy’s most beautiful islands. The series embraces Alex’s lifelong love of Italy, providing a personal and revealing guide to this beautiful Mediterranean country.

Alex will visit the beautiful island of Sardinia, glamorous Capri, Ischia, and the Aeolian Islands. The final stop of the tour will see Alex explore Sicily from north to south, experiencing its festivals, learning about its past and listening to the stories of locals.

This first episode looks at Sardinia as you’ve never seen it before. Alex Polizzi uncovers more about her family roots and discovers the rich and diverse culture of this fiercely independent and captivatingly beautiful island.

It’s an experience that is far from the stories of kidnappings and bandits that have blighted its reputation in the past and prevented many families from enjoying the island at its best. Out of the shadow of the bandits, Alex explores the stories behind the fear and takes a look at the caves used to evade capture.

Sardinia has more centenarians than anywhere else in the world, and Alex meets the team of scientists who are studying the genes of the locals.

Alex also samples the Cagliari cuisine, ventures inland to experience the rugged beauty of the Supramonte region and meets a woman who claims to be the last woman in the world to weave the precious sea silk.
